Date posted to GoodWorkCanada.ca: May 2 2010

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Position: Farm helpers / Interns
Type: full-time internship with meals, accom. & stipend
Organization: Ashburnham Farm - Gaelic Garlic http://gaelicgarlic.ca
Location: Bailieboro, Ontario, Canada

Interns
We are offering interns an opportunity to participate in a
process of farm reclamation that is very similar to what the
pioneers did on this farm 180 years ago. You will be part of
turning around a farm that has been in decline for 40 years.
For the last 11 years we have been working to salvage the
farm, re-clear the meadows, rehabilitate the fields and
create a viable 'all natural' farm environment. You are
welcome to participate in this transition and to see the
impact of the process.

Where
The farm is situated on top of a drumlin -- so the soil is
very mixed we have our own sand and gravel pits on the farm
which allows us to develop roads all over the property
giving us access to every corner of the farm all year round.
The property backs onto the Otonabee River, which runs into
Rice Lake -- great for canoeing and swimming in the summer
months.

The Farm
The farm is in transition and takes a great deal of labour
as meadows have to be cleared of trees, fences built, manure
spread and acres of garlic managed. We have a reasonable
herd of cattle that are a mix of red-angus and blondes. Our
bull is a registered Black Angus. We move the herd regularly
around the pastures. In this process you will see how we are
making new top soil and converting waste land into pasture.

Accommodation
We slept in the barn for a number of years while we were
restoring the farmhouse -- this is where you will be
sleeping when you come to our farm. The barn is one of
the largest barns in the county of Peterborough if not the
biggest and it is a restored 'bank barn' -- the view first
thing in the morning is a million dollar view -- and with
the barn door wide open -- it is just spectacular, I never
tire of this view -- and you wont either. Our meals etc. are
all held in the main house that was built starting in 1842.

Farm Tasks
You will enjoy almost every aspect of a typical family farm
-- this spring and summer we expect to see about 40 calves,
we will be harvesting 62,000 garlics -- which all have to be
weeded harvested -- first with the scapes and then the
garlic -- we also have to harvest the rhubarb and asparagus
for the market. I go to the market three days per week --
two markets in Peterborough and one in Lakefield -- so your
experience here on the farm will be quite diverse.

We will pay a stipend of $70 per week with a bonus if you
stay to the end of the planting season - the bonus will be
determined on the success that we have at the market this
season.
