INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Position: Organic Farm Interns (full-time & part-time)
Type: internship with room, board and stipend
Organization: The Worm Factory http://www.thewormfactory.ca/
Location: Westport, Ontario, Canada

The Worm Factory is the foundation of a biodynamic farm operation on Foley Mountain just outside of Westport, beautifully situated at the crossroads of The Frontenac Arch Biosphere and Historic Rideau Canal. The gardens are on thin soil on rock outcroppings that is nurtured with worm castings. More raised beds are being developed each year for growing mixed seasonal vegetables which are processed for winter storage and sold at the local farmers market and through CSA shares. An 8,000 square foot greenhouse is home to the composting worms under the benches and gourmet greens, edible flowers and herbs are produced for restaurant and catering clients.

The owner Gerrie and her daughter Julia Baker are dedicated to organic production and sharing their home and farm with local and international visitors. After a day in the gardens the large kitchen is often full of many people sharing great food and stimulating conversation. "Many hands make light work" is Gerrie's motto as she encourages everyone and gives freedom to identify what each person enjoys doing and patiently explains the future vision of the farm.

Full time and part time workers are needed immediately and can expect a warm welcome and real gratitude for their assistance. If you are ready to put roots down this may be the place for you as Gerrie says she is preparing to "Pass on the trowel". Quote "before I turn 60 next year I will transition the worm factory and gardens and focus all my attention on environmental education". Several classrooms each month have a visit from The Worm Lady as Gerrie demonstrates organic recycling with an indoor worm composting habitat to reduce garbage and build gardens. This summer she plans to put a group of leaders together to spread this education program into more school boards in the coming months.

Plans are now currently underway to establish a workers cooperative and members will enjoy a select piece of land to build a private sleeping cabin and the chance to pursue a market specialty of their own choice. This opportunity is available to a select few who are honest, hard working and committed to honoring natural systems while cooperating with others on a parallel path of harmony and sustainability.

Act now, come and visit, plan to experience this lifestyle for a short period or a lifetime. Email gbaker rideau.net* or call Gerrie at 613-273-7595.
